Zinfandel is one of the popular wines in California. If you are new to wine, you may want to start with this one. You can find it in different variants, such as white and the Zinfandel red wine, which is notably semi-sweet and flavorful. Although both are great wines for dinner, the red variant is particularly versatile and available in two styles, the distinctly red and pink Zinfandel, which is technically considered a white wine. Despite their differences, both wines come from the same grape.

 

Great for those who are new to wine

Tasting the range of Zinfandel red wines is a must to discover for yourself what makes each of them special. This is crucial, especially to first-time drinkers. The most distinct flavors of Zinfandel red wine are cherry, black pepper, licorice, blueberry, jam, boysenberry, plum, and cranberry. The first taste is characterized by an explosion of candied fruitiness, followed by a spiciness, and finished with a tobacco-like taste.

 

Bold

One of the noticeable traits of the Zinfandel red wine is its boldness. The color is lighter than Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and although it may be light-bodied like Pinot Noir, it is considered bold because of the high acidity and moderate tannin. That said, most Zinfandel wines tend to have more alcohol levels, which can range from 14 to 17 percent ABV. The higher the alcohol content, the oilier the texture and the bolder and bigger the body. So, check the ABV. Lighter Zinfandels are usually at 13.5 percent, and bolder and spicy ones have at least 16 percent.

 

Pair it with different types of food

The Zinfandel red wine leans towards the sweeter aspect of reds, making it the perfect partner to curry and spiced barbecue dishes. If you are planning to pair Zinfandel with a spicy dish, consider the spices you can recognize in the wine and add them to the sauce. The wine is easy to pair with lamb, beef, game, and even some fish, all cooked in different ways, like braised, stewed, or grilled.
